Myanmar Airways to resume flights to Bangkok in 2008

After over two months of suspension, the state-owned Myanmar Airways is to resume flights to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur in January 2008. A Myanmar Airways official in Rangoon was reported as saying that the airlines will resume flights to the capitals of Thailand and Malaysia in early January with A319 Airbus instead of the old MD 82 aircraft.

"We will use new A319 Airbus to fly to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur from the beginning of 2008," the official said.

However, officials at the Malaysian and Thailand office of Myanmar Airways said, they have not accepted any flight bookings as the information has not been officially notified.

"This information is still unofficial, so we have not taken bookings," the Malaysian agent said.

MAI was forced to suspend flights to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur in October when its London based insurance company stopped its insurance coverage.

According to the company's statement in October the suspension of its flights were caused by the protests, led by Buddhist monks, in the country.

"We are in the process of getting new aircraft as replacement," the statement said.

The official added that Myanmar Airways, a state-owned joint venture with Singapore, will resume daily flights to Bangkok five days a week to Kuala Lumpur.
